Belle’s Journey: An Osprey Takes Flight
Written by Rob Bierregaard and Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky

This exciting and beautifully illustrated story is about a young osprey, Belle. It follows her first migration all the way to Brazil in South America and her return home again. To understand her journey and learn more about migration, scientists fitted her with a special small radio transmitter. Her journeys were carefully monitored by Dr. Bierregaard, who has studied Ospreys for over 40 years in Massachusetts. Although some of the details are conjecture drawn from the information transmitted, in the book Belle has many adventures—from flying non-stop for days, to riding a cargo ship, to surviving a hurricane, and more. This is a story that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Be sure to read where she finds a home in Brazil, how long she stays, and how she finds her way back home. Beyond the story, additional information and resources are provided at the end, including websites and apps to learn more about migration studies and the technology behind it, as well as about the many other ospreys that have been tagged.
