The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times, By Jane Goodall and Douglas Abrams
“Probably the question I am asked more often than any other is: Do you honestly believe there is hope for our world? For the future of our children and grandchildren? And I am able to answer truthfully, yes.”
In this book, her final testament, Jane Goodall offers us not only reasons for hope but some practical ideas to realize those hopes.

Goodall, in dialogue with bestselling author Douglas Abrams, begins by exploring what “hope” means, concluding that it is far from passive. Instead, hope requires a positive vision of the future and determined energy in working towards that future.
The middle portion of the book comprises Goodall’s four reasons for hope.
- The Amazing Human Intellect
- The Resilience of Nature
- The Power of Young People
- The Indomitable Human Spirit
Goodall believes that, though the massive human intellect has created many of the problems we face today, such as climate change, mass extinctions, and the poisoning of our air and water, it can be joined with human wisdom to create solutions and foster environmental stewardship.
She further points to examples of nature’s ability to heal itself, especially with the help of humans. One powerful example is a tree that survived the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and is now considered sacred by many residents of that city.
The growing consciousness of and concern for the planet’s future that young people are exhibiting is yet another reason to be hopeful. Goodall describes many examples of environmental activism and stewardship among children and youth. She additionally urges parents to instill a love of nature early in bringing up their offspring.
And finally, Goodall has faith that the human spirit itself will drive us to seek solutions and spark better care of the Earth.
The book moves to a close with a review of Goodall’s storied career, from her remarkable work with chimpanzees to her later ambassadorship on behalf of the environment as a whole. It concludes with her personal message of hope:
“Together we CAN! Together we WILL! … Please, please rise to the challenge, inspire and help those around you, play your part. Find your reasons for hope and let them guide you onward.”
This well-reasoned and inspiring book should spark a desire in all of us to take action against the existential threats to our world and prod us forward in increasing our environmental stewardship. When hope sparks action, we—and the planet—will all benefit.
